Why couple counselling?

Relationships can be complex and painful, and sometimes it is difficult to find a way to break old patterns that have formed between a couple and which are causing harm to the relationship. It may be a specific problem that brings you to seek counselling, such as disagreements over money, feeling insecure in the relationship, family issues or an affair. There may be more general feelings of frustration or lack of understanding; whatever the issue, it can help to have a space in which you can be heard by another person with a view to understanding what each of you needs within the relationship. This can sometimes mean helping a couple separate in a healthy way, helping you achieve a more positive outcome if that is what feels right for you.

How long is the work?

As with individual work, the struggles that have brought you to counselling may themselves have formed over a period of many years. Psychodynamic counselling is not about finding immediate solutions to fix present problems, but rather about working in an exploratory way together over a longer period of time in order to navigate and address these complex issues. Together we will look at your communication style and try to understand how your respective relationship styles have contributed to the dynamic of your current relationship, and how particular ways of relating impact both of you.

What are sessions like?

Psychodynamic work is about creating a safe, confidential space in which you can really be listened to, and heard. I provide a neutral space so that both of you can express yourselves in a way that can be understood.
